Ireland’s important role in calculating when Easter falls
This is a term of convenience generally used to describe the ecclesiastical practices and structures which were to be found in the Celtic areas of the British Isles and Brittany those areas in which P- and Q-Celtic languages were spoken in the period c. It is misleading in a number of respects. The main problem is that it implies a single church, when in fact there was no such uniformity. The concept of a Celtic unity, deriving from a shared language or culture or faith, would have been unacknowledged, and indeed unknown, in this period, and there was no single metropolitan with power over the churches in all the Celtic areas. This too is incorrect. Although the churches in the Celtic areas did differ from Rome on matters such as the dating of Easter, the form of tonsure, and baptism, there were no major differences in matters of doctrine, and the churches of the Celtic areas were in touch with Rome. There were nevertheless common factors. All the churches in these lands gave a significant place to monasticism; they were closely associated with secular society, and derived much of their resources from donations made by sympathetic landowners; and they used a common language, namely Latin, in addition to the vernacular Celtic languages. These points are all evident in the contents of the Book of Deer. In addition to fulfilling their religious duties, monks in these early churches were devoted to learning, and contributed greatly to the cultural development of Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Other Christian groups, such as the Celtic Christians of Ireland and early Syriac Christians in the Middle East, continued with Easter more closely.
Such practices include: a distinctive system for determining the dating of Easter , a style of monastic tonsure , a unique system of penance , and the popularity of going into “exile for Christ”. The term typically denotes the regional practices among the insular churches and their associates, rather than actual theological differences.
The term “Celtic Church” is deprecated by many historians as it implies a unified and identifiable entity entirely separate from that of mainstream Western Christendom. Popularized by German historian Lutz von Padberg , the term “Iroschottisch” is used to describe this supposed dichotomy between Irish-Scottish and Roman Christianity.
But a general collective veneration of the Papacy was no less intense in Celtic-speaking areas. Nonetheless, distinctive traditions developed and spread to both Ireland and Britain , especially in the 6th and 7th centuries. Some elements may have been introduced to Ireland by the Romano-British St. Patrick , and later, others from Ireland to Britain through the Irish mission system of Saint Columba. However, the histories of the Irish , Welsh , Scots , Breton , Cornish , and Manx Churches diverge significantly after the 8th century.
People have conceived of “Celtic Christianity” in different ways at different times. Writings on the topic frequently say more about the time in which they originate than about the historical state of Christianity in the early medieval Celtic-speaking world , and many notions are now discredited in modern academic discourse.

The Yorkshire coastal town of Whitby is celebrated for its fish and chips, the semi-precious gemstone, jet, its associations with the explorer Captain Cook, Dracula — and its abbey. It is less well-known as the place where the timing of Easter was decided. The skeletal ruins of the 12 th century Whitby Abbey church are the only significant, visible, remains of the great Benedictine monastery that once dominated the town.
Even so, sitting on top of the ancient headland overlooking the old fishing harbour, they still impress and are every bit as large as a respectably sized cathedral. Every year, thousands climb the steps of East Cliff to visit them, take in the views and, hopefully, pop into the unusual parish church of St Mary on the way. The abbey ruins inevitably conceal an even older past — which also reveals the answer to the question about Easter.
The headland was settled in the Iron Age and people lived on it in Roman times. Possibly, the Romans placed a signal station there, similar to the one down the coast at Scarborough , on part of the peninsula that has long since been washed into the sea.

He relates how Augustine admonished his Celtic brethren. Furthermore, certain other of their customs were at variance with the universal practice of the Church. But despite protracted discussions, neither the prayers, advice, or censures of Augustine and his companions could obtain the compliance of the Britons, who stubbornly preferred their own customs to those in universal use among Christian Churches The Britons admitted that his teaching was true and right, but said again that they could not abandon their ancient customs without the consent and approval of their own people In reply, Augustine is said to have threatened that if they refused to unite with their fellow-Christians, they would be attacked by their enemies the English; and if they refused to preach the Faith of Christ to them, they would eventually be punished by meeting death at their hands.
And, as though by divine judgement, all these things happened as Augustine foretold.

Easter 2020: chocolate eggs, hot cross buns and how the date is decided
An evocative sight greeted me when I reached the top of the winding path that led up the hillside with its tall trees and winding thick roots. As I looked to the right I saw Chanctonbury Ring and about thirty people gathered there. Standing in front of them was my beautiful friend, Juliet, who had wrapped herself in a white blanket and was carrying a large stick on which she had attached a big white flag with a gold cross on it. It felt entirely appropriate, as I was there to celebrate the Celtic Easter, which happens on a different date to the Roman one that we customarily celebrate, and which is the date that the first followers of Jesus in these British lands would have celebrated.
As Juliet rang the bell she had brought with her, calling us to prayer, Greg explained what was to happen and off we went.

At age 7, Bede was given to the monks of Wearmouth Abby as an oblate. He never left. Indeed: Bede completed some 40 works in his busy life, none more important than History of the English Church and Its People. Bede ranks not only as the first English historian, but also one of the best. More specifically, the young Bede was given over to the care of the abbot Benedict Biscop, a learned man with refined tastes, who introduced Bede to the world of beauty and scholarship.
Bede’s love for church liturgy was cemented during an early tragedy, when all the monks but Benedict succumbed to the plague and Bede and his abbot alone labored together to continue the services until others could be sent to support them.

This might suggest the Irish were at fault. To do this correctly required observation of the moon, and facility at mathematics. The question of when to celebrate Easter had been contentious from the 2nd century. However Christians elsewhere ended their fast on the celebration of the Resurrection. Eventually it was agreed that the Resurrection was the feast that should end the fast and that it should be celebrated on the first Sunday after Passover 3. This 2nd century dispute was followed by one in the 4th century, arguing that the Jewish calculation of Passover had slipped into error.
The First Council of Nicaea decided that all Christians should celebrate Easter on the same day, and that the Christians should calculate the day for themselves 4 However the actual calculation of the date was not laid out, and over time different methods developed.
